5 Signs Your Business Website Needs a Redesign

Is your website costing you customers without you realising? Here are five clear signs it's time for a redesign — and what to do about it.

Most business owners know their website could probably be better. But how do you know when "could be better" crosses the line into "is actively costing you customers"?

Here are five clear signs it's time to invest in a redesign.

More than 60% of web traffic now comes from mobile devices. Test your site on a phone right now.

1. It doesn't work properly on mobile

If you built your site more than three or four years ago, there's a real chance it's not performing well on mobile. Tiny text, buttons that are hard to tap, layouts that look broken — these all send visitors straight to a competitor.

Test it yourself: Visit your website on a few different phones right now. If it doesn't feel natural and easy to use, that's a problem worth fixing.

2. It loads slowly

Speed is directly tied to both user experience and Google rankings. Google has made page speed a ranking factor, meaning slow sites are penalised in search results.

Check your speed for free at Google PageSpeed Insights. Anything below 50 on mobile is a serious problem. Below 70 is worth addressing.

3. It's hard to find on Google

If searching for your services in your area doesn't surface your website near the top, your site has an SEO problem. This could be structural (poor code, no structured data, missing metadata) or content-related (not enough relevant text for Google to understand what you do).

4. The design looks dated

A site that looked modern in 2018 can feel tired and untrustworthy today. This matters because your website is often the first impression a potential customer gets of your business. If your site looks old or amateur, it raises subconscious doubts about your work — even if your actual work is excellent.

Ask a friend who doesn't know your business to look at your site and give you their honest first impression.

5. It's difficult to update

If adding a new service or updating your contact details requires calling a developer, your site is holding you back. A modern website should let you manage your own content without technical knowledge.

If you find yourself reluctant to put your website URL on a business card or a van, that's the clearest sign of all. Your website should be something you're proud to direct people to.

What to do next

If two or more of these apply to your site, it's worth having a conversation with a professional web designer. A well-built replacement will pay for itself many times over in new customers and saved time.
